The Great Gatsby
The Great Gatsby explores themes of decadence, idealism, resistance to change, social upheaval, and excess, creating a portrait of the Jazz Age or the Roaring Twenties that has been described as a cautionary tale regarding the American Dream. The challenge is to express the atmosphere of disillusionment in the book in a create concept.
Design the book cover and illustrations through the use of symbolism and racy metaphors.
To evoke the feeling of the Art Deco art movement, which is the time period the story happened, gold and black color palettes are highly attractive. The white peacock represents the high class statues of Gatsby, and the embodiment of American dream. However, the luxury jewelry grips its throat which is a symbol of venality and the disillusionment of the American Dream — life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
